Effect of Pore Morphology on Fluid Flow through Track-Etched Polycarbonate Membrane

چکیده
The effect of pore morphology on fluid flow through track-etched polycarbonate membrane was studied numerically by using the fluid flow software FLUENT. The model of membrane structure is a 3D bi-periodic porous surface with circular holes of finite thickness. Both of the effects of constriction and expansion of inner pore geometries on fluid flow are taken into consideration in numerical calculation, and are compared with that of capillary pore. The flow pattern and resistance to flow in the interstics are obtained as results of the numerical solution. Results show that the inner construction of the filter pores has a significant influence on the flow pattern in the interstics and downstream and deposition of particles at the beginning stage of cake filtration. Results also show that neglecting of 10% expansion of inner pore diameter will result in 30% of over-estimated of pressure drop as compared to capillary pore model for fluid flow through track-etched polycarbonate membrane.

Track-etched polymer membranes are used to realize low-voltage electroosmotic (EO) pumps. The nanopores in polycarbonate (PC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes were fabricated by the track-etching technique, the pore diameter was controlled in the range of 100 to 250 nm by adjusting the etching time. The results show that these EO pumps can provide high flow rates at low applied vo...

A combined scanning electrochemical-atomic force microscope (SECM-AFM) has been used to probe the diffusional transport of target electroactive solutes in isolated nanopores of a track-etched membrane. A polycarbonate membrane (100-nm-diam pore size) hydrated with an electrolyte solution, containing a redox-active probe molecule, such as IrCl6(3-) or Fe(phen)3(2+), functions as the model membra...

Self-supported particle-track-etched polycarbonate membranes with nearly perfect cylindrical pores are used for the preparation of similarly perfect cylindrical polypyrrole nanowires and nanotubes. A complete investigation of the structural properties that result at different stages of the preparation route of polypyrrole nanowires and nanotubes is based on a combination of real and reciprocal ...
متن کاملCharacterization of track-etched membranes by small-angle x-ray scattering
Track-etched membranes are polymer foils irradiated with swift heavy ions and subsequently wet-etched to create pores by dissolving defects formed along the ion trajectories. Under suitable conditions, the resulting pores are of cylindrical shape and uniform in size. Such membranes are commonly used for filtration or as templates for nanowires, grown inside the pores, e.g., by electrochemical d...
